General Information

Karen on 'Dissing the Home Boys' (21). Magnetic Wall, KZN, South AfricaThis is some general info on what the club does, how the club runs and how you can make the most out of your climbing. For any other queries, contact one of the committee.

Regular climbs happen on weekends – either Saturday or Sunday or both – at nearby climbing hot-spots such as Monteseel & Shongweni (near Hillcrest), Kloof gorge etc. We also climb at the Old Mutual Sports Hall every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 17h00 to 22h00. This is the best time to catch up with other climbers and learn a few techniques.

Bring your friends along to club evenings and relax in the club room where soft-drinks and beers are on sale.

Joining the club

You are welcome to climb as a visitor / guest before you join the club – it often takes new climbers a couple of months before they decide to join. Students need to complete a form available at the Sports Administration Office, and a fee will be charged to your student account. All Climbers need to complete the Membership and Indemnity Form, and hand it to one of the committee members, at the club. A card allowing access to the wall is issued when joining. Download the form by clicking on the link above (MS Word format).

Some Do’s & Don’ts…

Do:

  • Come along and climb regularly

  • Join in the socials

  • Feel free to ask more experienced climbers for advice on buying equipment / shoes etc. You can save yourself lots of money...

  • Get involved in club outings, competitions, days away and fun weekends

  • Invite your friends to join the club

  • Pay your membership – it helps us to maintain equipment & the wall in top condition

  • Ask questions

  • Join in the laughter and ridicule

Don’t…

  • Feel pressured to attempt climbs too difficult

  • Be intimidated by the acrobatics performed by some of our more daring climbers

  • Hesitate to attempt your own acrobatics with a safety-mat below you, and someone experienced nearby to give advice

  • Be scared to ask for advice

  • Shout abuse at someone climbing up the wall as everyone will assume this is an opportunity to join in, leading to too much laughter and no serious climbing…  :)

  • Climb with bare feet – it makes the grips slimy. Please wear socks if you don’t have ‘tekkies’ or climbing shoes
